Pacific Masters Swimming EXCEL Weekend Clinic Schedule
The central theme of our clinic is Technique & Heart,
with Olympian Rowdy Gaines as our keynote presenter on Saturday,
and Coach Dave Durden on Sunday with Advanced Techniques for Competitors.
Everything in this EXCEL Weekend clinic builds around this theme.
Our goal is for you to go beyond where you are now as a coach and swimmer.
No matter what your level, we can help you go beyond
and grow your knowledge and enhance your skills.
Friday, June 10

SYNOPSIS: Rowdy will talk about the role that “heart” plays in competition and how coaches can help develop that component in their swimmers.

LOCATION: Pool. End lanes reserved in the 50m pool, one for filming, one as a buffer lane
SYNOPSIS: See the link for the flyer on why you should sign up for this GST filming – it is some powerful stuff folks! Your films are analyzed by “Dr. G” himself (Dr Genadijus Sokolovas) and you will receive a comprehensive written report from him after the clinic. Well worth every penny! Swim Power Test Excel Weekend. Please note that the cost at registration is slightly higher than what is quoted in this flyer. That is to cover processing fees for online registration.

INSTRUCTOR: Coach Brian Stack
LOCATION: Classroom near the pool
SYNOPSIS: Brian’s session is Postural Swimming. Anatomical and Structural Ideas to Make Swimming More Efficient. Learn how to reach your swimmers (and potential swimmers!) by focusing on these key elements that will help you and your swimmers get results. Coaches will head to the pool to continue this session in the water (after this and Kerry O’Brien’s session concludes).

SYNOPSIS: Kerry will be leading the “Creative Workout Design: Squeezing the Most Out of Your Athletes”workshop. He will share some creative ways to use space effectively, train different needs within the same workout, and keep the lanes engaged through set design. Coaches will head to the pool to continue this session in the water (after this and Brian Stack’s session concludes).

Vendors will be on deck from 11:00 to 7:30 p.m. with booths to sell their wares.

BRIEFING: The Clinic Development team and Mentor Coaches will lead a briefing on how the afternoon swim rotations will proceed. We also hope to have Rowdy Gaines join us for a brief time before he leaves for the airport.
LOCATION: On the pool deck
TIME: 1:30-4:30 PM
WORKSHOP: multiple water rotations – each segment roughly 45 minutes. Swimmers sign up in registration for their choice of 4 rotations (they are a total of six choices: fly, back, breast, free, starts, turns). Mentor coaches will lead the segments and participating coaches will work with mentor coaches in the various rotations.
LOCATION: We have use of the full 50m pool and the 25yd wellness pool. Two end lanes of the 50m pool will be reserved for Global Sport Technology’s filming of swimmers
TIME: 4:30-5:00 PM
WORKSHOP: Coach Scott Williams will lead a discussion on open water concepts and techniques to prepare participants for the Pool Open Water session that takes place Sunday morning in the 50m pool.

Saturday night social on the pool deck for all attendees. Food provided! And our vendors will have booths with their swim related products, so bring your wallet!
Sunday – June 12
Advanced Training Techniques at SMAC
TIME: 6:30-7:00 AM
Get together over coffee to map out the day and session options. Volunteers will be needed to help prep the 50m pool for the Open Water session.

WORKSHOP: Open Water Session
INSTRUCTORS: Coach Scott Williams and Coach Joel Wilson
LOCATION: The 50m pool
SYNOPSIS: Swimmers will learn pack swimming, sighting, cornering buoys, and other open water techniques. Swimmers will have the opportunity to participate in a timed “open water” swim the latter part of this session.
ONGOING: 8:00 – 12:00 PM

WORKSHOP: Participants choose from two available sessions, Breakout 1: Boot Camp and Breakout 2: Pilates & Core
BREAKOUT 1 SYNOPSIS: Coach Peter Finney will be conducting a Boot Camp for Masters Swimmers, telling us about how they built a Boot Camp feature on to the Manatee Masters program and demonstrating some of the exercises they are using in their boot camp.
BREAKOUT 2 SYNOPSIS: Coach Hermine Terhorst will be conducting a Pilates workshop she calls “Free. Easy. Organic. Blood Doping…Did I mention legal? She will address the question of, “What do they ‘really’ mean by core? and how to best apply it in the pool.

WORKSHOP: DragSox
SYNOPSIS: Rolandas Gimbutis and his Aqua Volo team of Gavin Lee and Eduard will be bringing a newer product, DragSox, to our clinic and letting us play with them in the water. Check out Coach Cokie Lepinski’s write up of DragSox on her Marin Pirates Masters team website. You can also visit the AquaVolo website to see videos of DragSox in action and sample workouts.

WORKSHOP: Advanced Techniques for Competitors
SYNOPSIS: Coach Dave Durden, head coach of the UC Berkeley Men’s Swim Team – and reigning 2011 NCAA Champs! – will be presenting advanced techniques for competitors in the 50m pool.
TIME: 12:00-1:00 PM
Lunch with free boxed lunches and a very cool raffle for all with some amazing giveaways. This lunch hour will also include a wrap up for the swimmers. Every participant receives one raffle ticket when they register. All participants have the opportunity to purchase additional raffle tickets – $5 for five tickets, $10 for twelve tickets. Raffle tickets are on sale from the beginning of the clinic up until noon on Sunday, June 12th. Take a look at our great raffle prizes! You’ll find them listed under the tab for Schedule of Events.
